Desalination Design Workshop

A few days after first designing their desalination model, the sixth grade science students began constructing their system. The materials they were provided with were things typically found as ocean trash like plastic water bottles and plastic wrap. The students were separated into groups of four and each group built their own design. At the end of each period, everyone voted on one design that would represent their class.

During the building phase, some students encountered unexpected challenges which they needed to overcome. For example, some designs were too unstable to stand on their own or the fresh water collection area would not be big enough. The students were given plenty of time to construct their model to the best of their ability and try to ultimately make their

design convert saltwater into fresh water most effectively.
