On February 21, 9th Grade Biology students learned about various plant systems and the roles they play in reproduction. Students also learned how to classify each part of the plant: roots, stems, and leaves.
They began with drawing and labeling all of the male and female parts of a flower into their notebooks. Some of the parts they needed to label were the Ovule, Sepal, Petal, Stigma, Style, Ovary, Filament, and Anther. The Filament and Anther are the male parts of the flower and are classified as the Stamen while the Stigma, Style, and Ovary are the female parts and are classified as the Pistil. These reproductive parts allow plants to produce the next generation.
Students then learned about the qualities of the different parts of the plant. Each part: roots, stems, and leaves, have their own characteristics which allow us to identify them. It is crucial that these three parts work together in order to keep the plant alive and healthy. Students were provided with a plate of spinach, an apple, carrot, celery, and a pinecone and practiced identifying each object as a root, stem, or leaf. The students had the option of breaking and cutting each object open in order to better classify them if they desired.
